Rehab Quotes
When I thought I was dying in rehab in 1994, 'I Won't back Down' was my mantra. It lifted my up out of the pain and made me fight through it. 'The Waiting'... summed up my life. We can't stand waiting, we rock 'n' roll men and women. Tom Petty's songs are like a great book that you revisit when you need help. His songs make me better.

I'd have played against him (Len Bias) for the next 14 years. I would have been in my prime and he would have been in his. I'll never forget what he looked like. He was a 'Wow!' player. When Maryland played and was on television, I watched. It was like, 'I need to watch this guy; I'll be seeing him real soon.'... It was just shocking. Thing is, cocaine was huge then. My brother had been in and out of rehab a few times.... It was a popular drug at the time. And guys I was playing against, like John Lucas and Michael Ray Richardson and John Drew had done cocaine. I was thinking: 'What the hell is up with this cocaine? I should try this once to see what it was all about.' Then, we heard the reports were that Bias only used it once... that it was his first time. When I heard that, it scared me to death... scared the daylights out of me. It scared me into not trying it even once, not going anywhere near it.

Oh, absolutely. No question about it. And the state of Texas, when I was governor, we built an awful lot of prisons. And to be frank with you, I made a deal, and the deal was that I would help pass the legislation and be for building a lot more prisons in Texas if I could get rehab programs for people who were alcoholics and drug abusers because I knew that over 80 percent of the crime committed in Texas was committed by people under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

I think even if they were paid an hourly wage, it'd be quite an improvement from what they get. And you know, I understand the arguments about they're getting their education paid for, they're this that and the other, but there are people on academic scholarships that don't have to deal with any extra rigors. They get their education paid for. And they don't have to deal with eight hours a day of football, and you know, if you mess up your knee you've got to deal with two hours of rehab everyday. So that's 10 hours of your day gone, and there's only 24 in a day. So, if they just gave him an hourly wage, even if they gave him 10 bucks, 12 bucks an hour, that'd be a vast improvement over what they got now.
