Kurt Schuschnigg was an Austrian politician and Chancellor of Austria before the country's annexation by Nazi Germany. His leadership was marked by attempts to maintain Austrian independence in the face of growing German pressure. He ultimately resigned in 1938 after being forced to accept the terms of the Anschluss.
