I've always seen my campaigns against corruption as political work of a purer form than what opposition leaders usually do. I hold no brief for Communists, but I believe in and will defend their right to act independently within the law. I question whether members of the committee are interested in defending our form of government or whether they are attempting to suppress political opinion at odds with their own.

It is necessary to be able to withstand all this, to agree to any and every sacrifice, and even-if need be-to resort to all sorts of stratagems, manoeuvres and illegal methods, to evasion and subterfuges in order to penetrate the trade unions, to remain in them, and to carry on Communist work in them at all costs.
