Lawrence Oates was a British army officer and Antarctic explorer, best known for his role in the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott. His self-sacrifice during the return journey became a symbol of bravery and endurance. He is remembered for his famous act of walking into a blizzard to try and save his companions.
